Our next show of the semester is a show called Horse Girls By Jenny Rachel Weiner, a play about pre-teen girls: their obsessions, their insecurties, and thier desperate need to find a place in the world.
Our directors of the show are Ollie Rood and Mya Frame. Ollie has directed many shows in the past with LFC like The Wolves and last semesters musical Grease. Ollie said they chose this show because "One of my mentors introduced me to this play back in 2021 and I immediately fell in love with it. I have a strong affinity for character driven shows that make you think, and Horse Girls does just that. I really hope my love for the show is shown through the work of my cast and crew."
On the other hand Mya has never directed with LFC before but she is very excited to be doing this show. As a director she says her favorite part of the shows process is " watching the actors grow into their roles and take creative liberties with their performance. It’s so exciting when an actor makes a bold or interesting character choice that goes beyond the script and our direction." Mya has acted many times before most notably as Orpheus in Eurydice last semester and understands that making bold choices as an actor makes or breaks the show. The cast is doing a wonderful job keeping things interesting with such a crazy show.
Like Thea Koskey who plays Robin in the show who talked about loving being ridiculous on stage. Her favorite part of the show is "the new friendships I’ve been able to make and getting to act ridiculous with people who enjoy being ridiculous too." This show could not happen without letting loose and enjoying yourself. So we strive to create connections beyond the rehearsal room and it shows in this show a lot. It takes a certain level of commitment for a group of college kids to play 13 year old girls but that's whats so fun about the show.
Cassidy Disantis talks about that she said she loves "every little unscripted moment that gets developed between the cast as we fall into our characters. I’ll turn to Sydney and it’s Margaret looking out towards Ashleigh. When Thea holds my arm, I can tell it’s Robin in that moment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But the level of commitment the group has as we immerse ourselves into the show has been unlike any over show I’ve been in. It’s connecting and at points, exhilarating." Which makes her advice to anyone in theater so special, she said "Go with the flow. Things will never turn out quite the way you expect them to. If you embrace it full heartedly, taking on new roles, reaching out to the people in the company, facing the challenges, you’ll find growth and connections where you least expect." As college students we can deeply relate to the idea that things don't always turn out the way you expect them to and whats fun is that we also touch on that in the show.
We then talked to some crew members in the show. Laura Bender who is the assistant stage manager said her favorite part is Margarets Poem, which you'll have to come see the show to find out why thats Lauras favorite part. Laura has been in LFC for two semesters now she was in Eurydice last sesmter helping with the props and loved that expirence so she came back and interviewed to be our ASM. Laura said something that LFC has brought her has been so many friendships especially the ones within this show.
Which is something our sound designer Kae Hagan also talked about their advice was "don’t be afraid to ask to hangout with cast and crew outside of practices, or to walk to events with them." Which definetly stands true with LFC, we even have company bonding in shows to help deepen the trust and friendships within the show. It could be something as simple as watching a movie together which is something this show has done together, they watched a horse movie together and it really brought them all closer.
Horse Girls is truly a special show that lets everyone just enjoy being their true authentic self. It's about girlhood, horses, and just pure chaos. We encourage you all like Ollie says to "Be yourself (and ride on) There is a space for everyone in theatre."
So, come see our show Horse Girls will be at Arts West November 2nd at 7pm and November 3rd at 2pm tickets are $5 in cash at the door. Its going to be an amazing show that'll keep you on your toes so be sure to come out and see it.
