Falling In Love with Our Next Show

ree

We are a week away from our next show Boy My Greatness. We are so excited to bring this story to you and to show you a part of theater history some seek to forget. Boy My Greatness is about 6 boy players warming up, rehearsing, gossiping, and falling in and out of love with one another. A play about growing up, gender identity, and theater history. Our faithful leaders Sarah Comer and Samantha Fanger are directing this show. Let’s meet them and get to know their vision for this heartfelt play.

Sarah Comer is our vice president and has previously assistant directed 12 Angry Jurors. She is super excited to be directing Boy My Greatness this semester. When asked why she chose this show she said “after finding this show through its original production, I fell in love with it. Its messages are incredibly important and topical when thinking about drag bans, religious fervor, and the government's interference into the arts that we are experiencing here in America. It touches on gender identity in a way that I think a lot of queer people can relate to, especially those of us that are in performance and art based spaces.” Theater is a space to lose yourself in a story and connect with it. This show is one that many people can connect with and if you can’t connect with it, it’ll open your eyes to real life events that connect to what these characters are going through.

Something super exciting about this show and our performances of it is the fact that we are one of the first people to perform it outside of New York. We are super happy to bring a show like this to Ohio.

Comer also talked about her favorite part of the whole experience of the show. She touched on something unique to LFC and that's our cast bonding events. For all of the shows we do we like to do show bonding outside of rehearsals. This is important for us to help build our community and it really reflects on stage with all of our shows. Comer said that's her favorite part its being able to “Hang out with my wonderful cast and crew outside of rehearsal spaces, whether thats having a strouds beach day, doing theater jeopardy, or going to see Hamilton at the Athena.”

Another thing that has helped this cast come together is Comers way of directing she said “I pride myself on being a chill director, as long as we're getting the work done we can have fun and goof around a little bit during rehearsals. I've found that allowing for little bursts of energy and spontaneity allow the cast to be fully themselves and open up their minds for a  better creative working environment. I also believe that it's best to allow the actors some freedom with their blocking and movements, so that the show feels more natural both to them and to a viewing audience.”

Samantha Fanger is the assistant director of this show and has previously been in 5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche and Antigone. She is super excited to be assistant directing this show. She said “I initially heard about the show from Sarah, who got me a copy of the script. I love classical plays, like old French plays, Greek plays, and Shakespeare, so this was right up my alley. The story is great and really poignant, so I really wanted to be involved with it in some way.”

She even touched on a hard portion of doing shows in a student organization like this which is the boundary of being a friend and director. She said “Making sure everyone's on task and enforcing that as their AD, not just their friend” has been the hardest part for her. She’s been doing wonderfully and we are so excited to see the show next week.

Come see Boy My Greatness next week November 15th at 7pm and 16th at 2pm $5 at the door CASH ONLY.
